Shock and disbelief have gripped the security fraternity and residents of Laikipia after a police officer turned on his colleagues during a violent altercation that left one officer dead and another seriously injured.

The tragic incident occurred when Constable Victor Chesang’ Mengich, 42, reportedly engaged in a heated confrontation with fellow officer Constable Abel Kivoto Kimanzi at their station. What began as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated into deadly violence, with Mengich allegedly stabbing Kimanzi multiple times, inflicting fatal injuries.

Distress calls from within the station alerted Sergeant Wahome Muigai Muiruri, the officer in charge of the post, who was at a nearby shopping centre at the time. Witnesses say the sergeant rushed back in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, only to be attacked as well. He sustained serious slash wounds while trying to restrain the assailant.

Members of the public and fellow officers intervened, managing to overpower Mengich before the situation deteriorated further. He was subdued, handcuffed, and rushed to hospital for treatment under tight security before being transferred to Nyahururu Police Station, where he is currently being held pending investigations.

The slain officer, Constable Kimanzi, has been described as a dedicated and courageous law enforcer. In a tragic twist, he had only recently been honoured at the 2025 Chandaria Bravery Awards for acts of heroism in the line of duty. His body has since been moved to the morgue, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The incident has sparked renewed concern over stress, mental health, and internal conflict management within the police service, with senior officers calling for calm as investigations continue. Authorities have assured the public that a thorough probe will be conducted to establish the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.

As the community mourns a fallen officer and prays for the recovery of the injured sergeant, questions linger over how a routine disagreement within a police station spiraled into a fatal tragedy.
