Former U.S. President Barrack Obama has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as “a true champion of democracy” and “a child of independence who endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya.”

In his statement, Obama recalled his personal encounters with Raila, noting that he often witnessed the ODM leader “put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions.” He lauded Raila’s legacy of peaceful reconciliation and unwavering commitment to democratic values, saying, “Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed.” Obama extended condolences to Raila’s family and the people of Kenya on behalf of himself and his wife, Michelle Obama.

Meanwhile, emotional scenes were witnessed in Kisumu as Raila Odinga’s body was airlifted from Kisumu International Airport to Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo for public viewing.

The NIS aircraft carrying the former Prime Minister’s remains landed at Mamboleo Grounds under tight security, as thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to the man many fondly called “Baba.”
