Seventeen-year-old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf is now in police custody after being arrested in connection with the controversial desecration of Kenya’s national flag, an incident that triggered public outrage and a swift response from authorities.
The incident occurred on 20th September 2025 at Nyayo Stadium during a football match between Mogadishu City Club and Police FC, where two young men were filmed kicking and disrespecting the national flag. The footage quickly circulated online, sparking anger among Kenyans who described the act as a deep insult to the nation’s identity and values.
The law is clear on such offences. Section 2B of The National Flag, Emblems & Names Act, Cap 99 states: “Any person who shows disrespect, in speech, manner or writing, to or with reference to the National Anthem, or to any specified emblem, specified likeness or specified name, or any representation thereof, shall be guilty of an offence.”
Authorities say the arrest of Yusuf marks progress in the case, but a manhunt for the second suspect—believed to still be within the country—remains active.
The arrest has reignited national conversations about respect for Kenya’s symbols of sovereignty, with many calling for stricter enforcement of laws that safeguard them.
