Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has alleged that there were plans to assassinate him while in police custody following his arrest during the Saba Saba protests.
Mukunji was arrested on July 7, 2025, at the height of the nationwide demonstrations and booked at Kibii Police Station at about 3:53 pm under OB number 06/07/07/2025. He was initially accused of incitement to violence before facing terrorism-related charges filed by the Anti-Terror Police Unit. His arrest sparked protests in Embu town, where residents poured into the streets demanding his release.

The youthful legislator, who was later released on July 10 on a KSh 300,000 cash bail, now claims that his detention was more sinister than portrayed. “I was not just arrested — there were plans to silence me permanently in the cells,” he said, alleging a plot to eliminate him under the cover of police custody.
The Anti-Terrorism Court in Kahawa has since dropped the terrorism charges, citing failure by the prosecution to make a case. But Mukunji insists his life remains in danger, warning: “If anything happens to me, Kenyans should know it was not an accident.”

His allegations have stirred debate across the political divide, with allies calling for urgent investigations and civil society groups demanding police accountability. The police have yet to respond to the claims.
The revelations add another layer of tension to the already charged political climate, as the fallout from the Saba Saba protests continues to reverberate across the country.
