Tensions flared at the joint retreat between the Kitui County Assembly and the County Executive in Mombasa on Wednesday after Speaker Kevin Kinengo Katisya sensationally revealed that fresh impeachment plans are brewing against him.
The Speaker, in a fiery address, accused some leaders of turning every retreat into a launchpad for impeachment schemes instead of focusing on service delivery.
“After every retreat, there are always impeachment rumours. In the first one, I was the target. In another, it was the Deputy Speaker. Later, it was the Kitui Finance Minister. Even now, I know there are plans for my impeachment — and I dare say, bring it on!” Kinengo declared, sparking murmurs.
While daring his rivals to face him both legally and politically, Kinengo stressed that endless impeachment theatrics were derailing development in the county.
“We should not waste time plotting to impeach each other. Instead, let us work together to build proper systems and structures that guarantee effective service delivery for the people of Kitui,” he appealed.
The Speaker further urged leaders to refrain from premature 2027 campaigns, warning that early politicking was stalling government programs.
“Effective service delivery will account for 80% of our re-election prospects. We don’t need early campaigns — we need to serve the people first,” he insisted.
Kinengo also called for the construction of County Assembly Ward offices to enhance grassroots representation and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting Governor Julius Malombe’s “Kitui Promise” agenda.
But it was his bold dare that stole the show, setting the stage for heightened political drama as Kitui’s leadership battles simmer beneath the surface of the much-publicized retreat.
