The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the death of a Kenyan police officer serving in the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening, August 31, 2025, at approximately 1700 hours Haitian time (0200 hours Monday, Kenyan time), during a road traffic accident along Kenscoff-Pétion-Ville Road in the Pelerin 9 area.
According to a statement released by NPS, the accident happened as MSS officers conducted a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro vehicles. During the towing process, an unexpected mishap led to the fatal crash, claiming the life of the Kenyan officer as well as two Haitian civilians. Eight other MSS officers sustained injuries, three of whom remain in critical condition and are receiving medical care in hospital.
The NPS conveyed its deepest condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues, assuring them of full support during this period of mourning. The next of kin have already been notified.
Meanwhile, the Multinational Security Support Mission, in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP), is coordinating efforts to repatriate the officer’s body to Kenya. Arrangements have also been made to ensure that all injured personnel continue to receive the highest standard of medical treatment available.
NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga reaffirmed the service’s commitment to the mission in Haiti, emphasizing that Kenya remains dedicated to working with international partners to restore peace and stability in the Caribbean nation.
“As a service, we remain committed to establishing lasting peace and security for the people of Haiti,” Nyaga said.
The Kenyan-led peacekeeping mission was deployed earlier this year under a UN mandate to stabilize Haiti, which has been grappling with violent gangs, political unrest, and humanitarian crises.
