Kalonzo Sounds Alarm on Ruto-Appointed IEBC, Warns Against Electoral Tampering

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has issued a stern warning to the newly sworn-in Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), terming it a “handpicked Ruto commission” and cautioning against any attempts to undermine future elections.

Speaking in Murang’a County during the emotional burial of Boniface Kariuki — the young mask vendor fatally shot by police during recent anti-government protests in Nairobi — Kalonzo condemned the state’s silence and inaction, calling it a “screaming complicity.”

“The new IEBC has been sworn in today, and one thing is very obvious: This is a handpicked Ruto commission. To the new IEBC, do not try Kenyans. Any attempt to tamper with the electoral process will be met with unrelenting resistance,” Kalonzo declared.

He said the irregularities surrounding the formation of the new commission had already raised public concern, warning that the will of the people “is not negotiable.”

Reflecting on the day’s somber occasion, Kalonzo emphasized the resilience of the people of Murang’a and the Kariuki family, vowing that justice for Boniface must not be delayed.

“As we mourn a young life stolen by Kenyan taxpayers’ bought bullets, we reaffirm this truth: justice delayed is not only justice denied, it is a continuation of violence,” he said.

Notably, the government was accused of snubbing the event, with Kalonzo noting that no official representative or message of condolence had been sent.

“Their silence screams of complicity,” he said, in what many saw as a direct indictment of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s handling of police brutality claims.

The burial drew several high-profile figures, including Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, Speaker Emeritus JB Muturi, Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, MPs Jayne Kihara and Amos Mwago, and former Transport PS Irungu Nyakera.

The event not only highlighted the deepening tensions over state violence but also brought to the fore growing skepticism about the independence and integrity of the newly reconstituted IEBC.
