Nearly two decades after Lang’ata Cemetery was declared full, shocking revelations have emerged about the continued burials at the site, raising alarm over severe public health hazards. The overcrowded graveyard, once a peaceful resting place for the departed, now faces a crisis of shallow graves, exposed human remains, and interference by wild animals.

The Ministry of Health, through the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, today presented a damning assessment report before the Parliamentary Committee on Implementation.
Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, who delivered the report, detailed the grave dangers posed by the continued use of Lang’ata Cemetery, warning that the situation demands immediate intervention.

According to the report, bodies are being buried in dangerously shallow graves, leaving them vulnerable to exposure. Wild animals have reportedly scavenged through some burial sites, disturbing human remains, a horrifying reality that poses a significant health risk to nearby communities. The report further highlights the cemetery’s congestion, which has forced gravediggers to exhume old remains to create space for new burials.

Public health experts warn that the crisis at Lang’ata Cemetery could escalate into an environmental and health disaster if not urgently addressed. Decomposing bodies in overcrowded burial grounds can contaminate groundwater, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks in adjacent residential areas. Nairobians have also raised concerns over the dignity of their loved ones being compromised in the overcrowded site.

In response, the government is working with the Nairobi City County Government and other stakeholders to identify a suitable alternative burial site. Authorities emphasize that safeguarding public health remains a top priority, and urgent mitigation measures will be implemented to prevent further degradation of Lang’ata Cemetery.

However, questions linger: Why has it taken nearly two decades to find a solution? Will Nairobi residents finally get a dignified, secure burial ground for their loved ones? As pressure mounts, the government must act swiftly to resolve this looming catastrophe before it spirals out of control.
