Women from all walks of life gathered at Miambani Primary School to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, marking a powerful moment of recognition, empowerment, and calls for action against gender-based violence.

The event, themed “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality.”, saw women from diverse backgrounds—entrepreneurs, community leaders, professionals, and grassroots activists—come together to showcase their achievements, share experiences, and push for greater gender equality in Kitui.

Honoring Women as Champions of Gender Equality
A key highlight of the celebration was the recognition of outstanding women as champions of gender equality, with various individuals and organizations being awarded for their contributions in leadership, business, education, and community development.

Women speakers at the event emphasized the need for stronger policies to protect women’s rights, close the gender pay gap, and enhance access to leadership opportunities.

Call to End Femicide and Gender-Based Violence
The celebrations also became a platform for a strong stand against femicide and gender-based violence (GBV). Speaker after speaker condemned the rising cases of violence against women, urging authorities to act decisively against perpetrators.

Governor Julius Malombe, who attended the event, pledged to strengthen GBV response mechanisms in Kitui, including the establishment of a GBV reporting desk in hospitals to assist survivors of violence.

“Gender-based violence remains a serious issue that we must confront head-on. As a county, we will set up a dedicated GBV reporting desk in our hospitals to ensure survivors receive immediate help and justice,” he said.
Showcasing Women’s Economic Empowerment

The event also featured an exhibition of various women-led projects, demonstrating the economic resilience of Kitui women. One of the standout presentations was by Kyalo Kya Maendeleo Foundation (KKM), which showcased its basket weaving project.

Governor Malombe lauded the initiative, stating, “The craftsmanship displayed here is not just about art—it is about empowerment and financial independence. These women are creating opportunities for themselves and others.”

In support of the women’s work, the governor purchased several baskets and awarded the group financial support to boost their business.

The Kyalo Kya Maendeleo Foundation, founded by Dr. Augustus Muli, trains Kitui women in modern basket weaving and provides them with access to international markets, particularly in Europe.

A Resounding Message of Unity and Progress
The event was graced by various leaders, including Kitui County Assembly Majority Leader Munyoki Mwinzi, Assembly Minority Leader Alex Nganga, county cabinet members, and development partners.

As the celebrations concluded, women left energized and united in their call for equal rights, economic opportunities, and an end to gender-based violence.

“Today is not just about celebration—it is about action. We are here to demand a future where all women and girls can thrive without fear,” said one of the awardees.
With renewed commitment from both leaders and the community, the International Women’s Day celebrations in Kitui reinforced that the fight for gender equality is far from over—but the voices of Kitui women are louder than ever.
