A Call for Spiritual and Moral Awakening

As the Lenten season begins, His Lordship Rt. Rev. Joseph Mwongela, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui, has called on the faithful to embrace repentance, renewal of faith, and moral transformation during this sacred period.

Presiding over Ash Wednesday Mass at Our Lady of Africa Cathedral, Bishop Mwongela emphasized the need for self-examination, forgiveness, and a return to God, urging Christians to take personal responsibility in transforming both their lives and society.

A Call for Personal and Social Transformation

In his homily, the bishop reflected on the Gospel message, “Remove first the log in your own eye before taking out the speck from your neighbor’s” (Luke 6:42), reminding believers that true change begins from within.

“This season is not just about receiving ashes but about turning back to God. It is a time for self-reflection, renewal of faith, and reconciliation with one another,” he said.

He further encouraged the faithful to fast not just from food, but from dishonesty, hatred, and destructive habits.

Bishop Mwongela also decried the growing moral decay in society, particularly addressing issues such as substance abuse among the youth, infidelity in marriages, and the erosion of family values.

“Our society is in crisis because we have abandoned God. Let us return to Him in humility and seek His mercy,” he urged.

Kitui Diocese Lenten Campaign Set for February 18 at Kabati Parish

The Catholic Diocese of Kitui is set to officially launch its Lenten Campaign on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Kabati Parish, where Bishop Mwongela will lead the faithful in prayer, reflection, and a call to action for both personal and societal transformation.

The campaign will focus on promoting justice, peace, and charity, urging Catholics to actively participate in nation-building by fostering unity, honesty, and service to the less fortunate.

“Lent is a journey towards Easter, where we celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death. Let us use this period to renew our faith and become ambassadors of God’s love and mercy,” Bishop Mwongela concluded.

As the Lenten season unfolds, the bishop’s message serves as a wake-up call for spiritual renewal, moral responsibility, and a deeper commitment to faith and community service.
