A tragic road accident along the Kwa Vonza-Seku road has claimed the lives of three students from South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), sending shockwaves across the institution and beyond.

The devastating incident occurred yesterday evening when the motorbike they were riding collided with the rear of a stationary lorry, leading to their untimely demise. Eyewitnesses recount a harrowing scene as the impact left the victims with fatal injuries.

Confirming the accident to Channel 15 News via phonecall, Kwa-Vonza Chief Ronald Mbuvi said the three male students were riding on their motorbike when they suddenly crushed into the back of a parked Sand truck that had developed a mechanical issue and didn’t have proper indicating hazards to warn oncoming traffic.

Distraught students and university staff gathered at the scene, mourning the sudden loss of their colleagues. A wave of grief and anger swept through the institution, with many calling for urgent safety measures, including improved lighting, road signs, and pedestrian crossings near the campus to prevent future tragedies.

“This is not the first time we are witnessing such an incident here. The government must act before we lose more lives,” lamented one SEKU student who was at the scene.

Police have launched investigations into the accident, and efforts are being made to establish whether the lorry driver had adhered to proper road safety measures. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the Kitui County Referral Hospital morgue, as funeral arrangements begin.

This heartbreaking incident has once again reignited concerns over road safety around institutions of higher learning, with students demanding urgent interventions to prevent further loss of life.
