A heavy veil of grief descended on Kathua Village in Endau Malalani Ward, Kitui East on Friday , as mourners gathered to bid a tearful goodbye to five-year-old Amanda Mutheu, the young girl whose life was brutally and senselessly taken in an incident that has stunned the nation.

Amanda, who tragically died after being thrown from the second-floor balcony of her mother’s apartment in the Jacaranda area of Kahawa West, Nairobi, was laid to rest on Friday at her family’s rural home. The chilling act is alleged to have been carried out by her own uncle, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time.

The emotional burial ceremony was attended by relatives, neighbors, church members, and shocked members of the local community who came to show solidarity with the grieving family. Her mother, Ann Syovinya, broken by the weight of loss, told mourners that her daughter had just celebrated her fifth birthday a week before the fatal incident.

“She was happy, healthy, full of life. I never imagined I’d be burying my child this soon. I want justice for Amanda,” she said through sobs.

According to an official statement released by the management of Jacaranda Gardens, the suspect, Amanda’s uncle, had been causing a commotion in the family apartment. Inside were Amanda, the house girl, and the uncle. The house girl, sensing danger, attempted to flee with Amanda but was overpowered. In a horrifying turn of events, the uncle allegedly snatched the child and threw her from the balcony.

“The house help ran out of the apartment screaming for help. Neighbors and security rushed to the scene and subdued the uncle before handing him over to Kiamumbi Police,” read part of the statement.

Amanda was quickly rushed to Kenyatta University Referral Hospital and admitted to the ICU. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.

Photos from the burial captured the heart-wrenching scene: a tiny white coffin, tearful family members clinging to one another, and villagers overcome with sorrow and disbelief.

Religious leaders presiding over the ceremony condemned the act as demonic and called for collective responsibility in protecting children, especially within family settings.

Amanda’s brutal death has sparked public outcry and renewed debate over substance abuse, mental health, and child safety in domestic environments. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, with many demanding swift and firm justice.

As her small body was lowered into the earth, Amanda Mutheu left behind a scar not just on her family, but on an entire nation shaken by the cruelty she endured.
