A somber mood engulfed Musukini village in Mwingi Central yesterday as family, friends, and neighbors gathered to bid farewell to 19-year-old Joyce Munanie, whose brutal murder shocked the community. Munanie’s body, which was discovered dismembered and stashed in a sack, was laid to rest in an emotional burial ceremony.
Mourners struggled to come to terms with the heinous act that cut short the life of the young woman. Grief and anger were palpable as speakers demanded justice for Munanie, calling on authorities to ensure the perpetrator faces the full force of the law.
The suspect, who is accused of committing the gruesome crime, remains in remand as he awaits prosecution. Local leaders and human rights activists attending the burial urged the judiciary to expedite the case and impose a harsh sentence if the suspect is found guilty.
“This is not just a crime against Joyce; it is a crime against our entire community. We must ensure that such acts do not happen again,” said one of the mourners.
The tragedy has reignited concerns over rising cases of gender-based violence in Kitui County, with calls for increased efforts to protect young women from such brutal attacks.
