A tragic accident has claimed three lives at the Tafoam (Shalom) Tunnel along Mombasa Road after an overspeeding lorry lost control and rammed into a tunnel wall at the Kitengela Interchange.
Eyewitnesses say the lorry was descending at high speed when the driver appeared to lose control of the vehicle. The lorry veered off the road and violently slammed into the concrete wall of the tunnel, killing all three occupants on the spot.

“It was like a bomb had exploded. The vehicle was completely wrecked and pinned into the tunnel wall,” said James Ouma, a boda boda rider who was among the first responders.
Emergency teams from the Kenya Police Service and medical responders from Shalom Community Hospital arrived at the scene within minutes. Authorities confirmed that all three victims were male and are believed to have been part of the truck’s crew.

Traffic along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway was heavily disrupted for hours as police cordoned off the area to clear the wreckage and carry out preliminary investigations.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid speeding, especially on curved sections and tunnel entries.

This fatal crash adds to a growing list of serious accidents on Mombasa Road, raising renewed concerns about speeding, poor signage, and safety measures at major interchanges.
The identities of the victims are yet to be released as their families are being notified.
