Detectives in Mwea East have arraigned a suspect linked to a KSh 3 million fraudulent scheme that targeted unsuspecting members of the public with promises of employment in the National Police Service.
The case was reported at Wang’uru Police Station by three victims who alleged that Mercy Prudence Mbaika Mutie falsely claimed she could secure their recruitment into the police service. Trusting these claims, the victims handed over substantial sums of money.
After receiving the funds, the suspect allegedly went into hiding, cutting off communication with the complainants. Following failed attempts to recover their money, the victims reported the matter to the authorities.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Mwea East conducted investigations that led to the arrest of the suspect. Mutie was arraigned at Wang’uru Law Courts, facing charges of conspiracy to defraud contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code, and three counts of obtaining money by false pretences contrary to Section 313. She was released on a KSh 500,000 cash bail with a surety of the same amount.
The DCI has warned the public against individuals claiming they can influence recruitment into government institutions, emphasizing that recruitment into the National Police Service is transparent, merit-based, and strictly free of charge.
