A man has been arrested and is in custody over the murder of his 60-year-old mother whose dismembered body was found dumped by the roadside in Nyandarua Central Sub-County last month.
The deceased, Millicent Wahura Mwangi, was reported missing at Olkalou Police Station on November 11, 2025, before the case took a turn for the worse after detectives established it was a suspected homicide.
On November 14, members of the public discovered a female torso stuffed in a sack at Rumathi village, about 37 kilometres from Olkalou, along the Malewa–Kipipiri Road. Police from Kipipiri Police Station documented the scene and transferred the remains to JM Kariuki Memorial Funeral Home.
The family later identified the torso as that of Ms Mwangi, confirming fears that the missing person case had turned into a murder investigation. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) subsequently took over the probe, launching a manhunt that led to the arrest of the deceased’s second-born son, Benson Maina Mwangi, on November 20 in Kamulu.
He was arraigned before the Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court in Olkalou on November 24, where detectives obtained 21-day custodial orders to allow completion of investigations. The suspect remains in custody pending mention on January 19, 2026.
On December 23, homicide detectives conducted a scene re-enactment and an underwater search at River Malewa, guided by the suspect. Investigators recovered several exhibits, including a machete believed to have been used in the killing, as well as a bedsheet and a blanket allegedly disposed of after the murder.
In a statement, the DCI said the recovery of the exhibits was a critical breakthrough as detectives piece together the final moments of the deceased.
