Several passengers, including school-going students returning to class, are receiving treatment at Kitui County Referral Hospital after a 41-seater matatu overturned this evening in Kitui East.

The Nairobi-bound vehicle, which had left Mbitini in Kitui Rural, reportedly lost control while navigating a sharp corner at Kiini.

“The matatu was overspeeding and when it reached the bend, it failed to manage the corner and rolled,” said Mutua Mutia, a resident of Kiini who witnessed the accident.

The exact number of casualties and the condition of the injured remain unclear. Attempts to reach Kitui Medical Superintendent Dr. Kyamia for an official update were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls by the time of going to press.

Police have secured the scene, and investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.
