The National Treasury has disbursed Ksh 5 billion to the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF). This initial allocation, released after months of negotiation with Members of Parliament, will revive critical grassroots projects that had stalled due to a national cash crunch.
To ensure continuity, Treasury has pledged monthly disbursements of Ksh 7 billion from January to June 2025. The 2024/25 NG-CDF budget has also been increased by 2.3% to Ksh 54.7 billion. These funds are earmarked for improving school infrastructure, constructing police stations, and providing much-needed bursaries to vulnerable students.
This comes amidst strained government finances, with Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u attributing previous delays to revenue shortfalls. Ndung’u defended his office against accusations of mismanaging the NG-CDF funds, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing school projects and scholarships for the education sector.
The additional funding is expected to aid reconstruction efforts for schools damaged by natural disasters and ensure smoother operations of junior secondary programs. Legislators have urged Treasury to maintain a consistent flow of funds to avert future disruptions to community projects.
This injection of funds underscores the government’s commitment to grassroots development despite broader economic constraints.
