President William Ruto has appointed a 15-member Panel of Experts to oversee and facilitate the compensation process for victims of demonstrations and public protests across the country.
The panel will be chaired by the President’s Constitutional Advisor, Professor Makau Mutua, while Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo will serve as the vice-chairperson.
Other members appointed to the panel include Kennedy N. Ogeto, Dr Duncan Ojwang, Naini Lankas, Dr Francis Muraya, Juliet Chepkemei, Pius Metto, Fatuma Kinsi Abass, and Raphael Anampiu.
To provide technical support, Richard Barno and Dr Duncan A. Okelo Ndeda have been named as co-technical leads, while Jerusah Mwaathime Michael and Dr Raphael Ng’etich will serve as joint secretaries to the panel.
The appointment of the panel signals a major step in addressing concerns raised by citizens and human rights groups over loss of life, injuries, and property destruction that have resulted from waves of protests in recent months.
The panel is expected to come up with clear frameworks for identifying victims, assessing claims, and disbursing compensation in line with the government’s commitment to safeguard human rights and uphold justice.
