The National Police Service (NPS) has launched investigations following the disruption of a church service at St Peter’s ACK Church, Witima, Othaya in Nyeri County, after a tear gas canister was reportedly thrown into the church during Sunday worship.

In a press statement issued on January 25, 2026, the police described the incident as deeply regrettable and unacceptable, confirming that it occurred at around 11am while several congregants and political leaders were attending the service.

According to the NPS, the tear gas incident disrupted the proceedings, forcing worshippers to flee the sanctuary in panic. Police also confirmed reports of several vehicles being damaged within the church compound during the chaos.

The Regional Police Commander for Central Region immediately directed the Nyeri Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) to secure the scene and commence investigations. Additionally, the Inspector General of Police ordered the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) to conduct parallel investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police said no injuries were reported.
“The nature of this incident is totally unacceptable and has no place in this country,” the NPS stated, reiterating that churches are sanctuaries and must not be drawn into political or violent activities.

The National Police Service emphasized that it abhors violence in all its forms and warned that anyone found culpable would be dealt with firmly and swiftly in accordance with the law.
