What began as a solemn burial ceremony in Huduruma Estate, Ngurubani, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, turned into a scene of chaos and panic after a swarm of bees attacked mourners, leaving several hospitalized. The bizarre incident, which occurred during the burial of 76-year-old retired teacher Faith Njeri Murigu, has left the local community in shock.
The funeral procession had proceeded smoothly from ACK St. Luke Wang’uru Church, where mourners had gathered for a service. However, just as preparations were underway to lay Faith Njeri to rest, a sudden swarm of bees descended upon the crowd.
Witnesses described the attack as swift and overwhelming, forcing mourners to scatter in all directions, abandoning the burial site in search of safety. Screams filled the air as people were stung multiple times, with some requiring urgent medical attention at nearby health facilities.
Rev. Irene Gitari of ACK St. Luke Church shared her account of the incident, stating that the grave had been prayed over prior to the attack. “We had prayed over the grave, and just as we were preparing to bury her, the bees launched the attack. It was shocking and inexplicable,” she said.
Local authorities are now investigating the unusual event, as residents speculate on what might have triggered the attack. The incident has left Huduruma Estate residents grappling with not only the loss of their beloved community member but also the traumatic aftermath of the unexpected assault.
As those injured recover from the ordeal, the community is left with more questions than answers about the strange occurrence that turned a moment of grief into one of terror.
