The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has distanced itself from the ongoing impeachment process against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, clarifying that the party is not involved in the ouster attempt. According to ODM Deputy Party Leader, Abdulswamad Nassir Hassan, the impeachment was a parliamentary process initiated and handled by individual MPs exercising their roles as elected representatives.
Speaking on Tuesday, Nassir emphasized that the decisions made by ODM members regarding the proposed impeachment of Gachagua were done in their individual capacities and were not party-driven. “This is purely a parliamentary process, and our members are free to express their positions on the floor of the House as representatives of the people,” Nassir stated.
ODM’s statement comes two days after the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached by National Assembly on 11 charges . During the voting process, 281 members of the National Assembly voted to impeach the second in power while only 44 members voter against.
However, Nassir was quick to point out that any decisions made during parliamentary debates on the matter were not influenced by the party’s leadership or any internal directives.
ODM’s stance appears aimed at steering clear of any political backlash or partisan blame for the impeachment motion, which has triggered mixed reactions across the country.
