Makueni Leads the Way in Women’s Health: Laparoscopic Surgery to Revolutionize Gynecological Care

Makueni County is on the verge of a groundbreaking transformation in women’s healthcare, as it partners with the Laparoscopy Mashinani Program and FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) to introduce laparoscopic surgery, a cutting-edge medical technique set to redefine treatment options for women in the region.

This minimally invasive procedure, also known as keyhole surgery, involves using a high-tech laparoscope—a slender device equipped with a camera and light—to diagnose and treat gynecological conditions with unparalleled precision. This advancement is a game-changer for women suffering from endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancies, and those requiring tubal ligation or hysterectomy.

Bridging the Gap in Specialized Care

In a powerful step towards equitable healthcare, this initiative aims to take advanced surgical services to rural Kenya, ensuring that women who previously had to travel long distances—or had no access to specialized care at all—can now receive world-class treatment close to home.

On Monday, FIGO President Prof. Kihara Beatrice, accompanied by a team of top gynecologists, paid a courtesy visit to Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo in Wote, where they held high-level discussions on maternal health and surgical innovation.

Governor Kilonzo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Makueni remains at the forefront of medical advancements.

“The future of healthcare is in technology, and as a county, we refuse to be left behind. This partnership is a bold step towards giving our women access to world-class treatment without the burden of travel and financial strain,” stated Governor Kilonzo.

Why Laparoscopic Surgery is a Game-Changer

Gynecological conditions remain one of the leading causes of death and disability among women globally, with those in resource-limited regions suffering the most due to lack of access to specialized care.

With laparoscopic surgery, Makueni women will benefit from:
✅ Smaller incisions – Less pain and faster healing
✅ Minimal scarring – Better cosmetic outcomes
✅ Reduced blood loss – Lower need for transfusions
✅ Shorter hospital stays – Faster recovery and return to daily life
✅ Lower risk of infection – Enhanced patient safety

Makueni Paving the Way for the Future of Women’s Healthcare

This initiative is a major milestone in Governor Kilonzo’s vision for a healthier Makueni, setting a precedent for other counties to follow. By embracing modern surgical techniques, Makueni is not only saving lives but also empowering women with better healthcare solutions.

The message is clear: quality healthcare is no longer a privilege but a right, and Makueni is leading the way!
