In a bold move to combat water scarcity, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has spearheaded a transformative partnership between Makueni County and Water Mission Kenya, a globally recognized non-governmental organization. The alliance aims to revolutionize water access through a Community-Owned Model, ensuring residents benefit from safe, reliable, and round-the-clock water supply.

A Lifeline for Emali Residents
The Emali Water Project is at the heart of this collaboration, with Water Mission Kenya committing to one year of full support and management. This guarantees uninterrupted water supply for thousands of residents, marking a significant shift towards sustainable water solutions in the county.

Mutyambua Borehole: Makueni’s Water Giant
Among the most ambitious projects under this partnership is the Mutyambua Borehole Project, Makueni’s highest-yielding borehole. Producing an impressive 50,000 liters per hour, this near-complete initiative (currently at 90%) will provide lifeline services to 442 households, Mutyambua Primary School, Mutyambua Health Centre, Mutanda Girls, and Mutanda Primary School.

Expanding Safe Water Access Across the County
Beyond Emali and Mutyambua, several other communities stand to benefit:
- Muatineni Water Project will serve 620 households, Msingi Bora Academy, Kyunguni and Kilia Primary Schools, and Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital.
- Sultan Hamud Water Project is set to quench the thirst of 1,200 households, along with Three Bells Academy, Sultan Primary School, and Sultan Secondary Schools.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.’s Vision: A Water-Secure Makueni
This ambitious partnership underscores Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.’s unwavering commitment to addressing water challenges through community-driven solutions and strategic collaborations. His administration’s push for sustainable water access is not just about infrastructure—it’s about empowering communities to take charge of their own water security.

“This initiative marks a new chapter for Makueni County. Safe water access should never be a privilege but a fundamental right. With Water Mission Kenya, we are ensuring every household gets reliable water supply,” Governor Mutula stated.

With the implementation of these projects, Makueni is positioning itself as a model county in water sustainability, proving that bold leadership and strategic partnerships can drive lasting change. The countdown to a water-secure Makueni has officially begun!
