The race for the next Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has entered a crucial stage, with the Selection Panel unveiling the shortlisted candidates. Among them is Jacob Ngwele Muvengei, a distinguished son of Kitui and former Nairobi County Assembly Clerk, who is set to appear for his interview on Tuesday, 25th March at 2 PM. His candidacy has sparked excitement, especially in Kitui, where he enjoys strong support due to his expertise in legislative affairs and governance.

Ngwele will be facing stiff competition from other high-profile candidates, including Charles Nyachae, a seasoned politician and former CIC Chair, scheduled for an interview on 24th March at 2 PM, and Anne Amadi, the former Registrar of the Judiciary, who will appear before the panel on 24th March at 11 AM.

    How We Got Here

The process of selecting a new IEBC Chairperson began on 14th February 2023, when President William Ruto, through Gazette Notice No. 1901, declared a vacancy for the Chairperson position along with six vacancies for IEBC Members. A month later, on 14th March 2023, another Gazette Notice No. 2643 reaffirmed these vacancies, setting the stage for a fresh recruitment process.

On 27th January 2025, President Ruto, through Gazette Notice No. 715, appointed a Selection Panel to oversee the recruitment of the new Chairperson and Commissioners. The panel swiftly moved into action, and on 1st February 2025, it published advertisements in the Gazette, Daily Nation, The Standard, and the Parliamentary Service Commission’s website, inviting applications from qualified candidates.

    What’s Next?

With the shortlisted candidates now lined up for interviews, the Selection Panel will assess their suitability based on their vision for IEBC reforms, electoral integrity, and leadership abilities. The stakes are high, and all eyes are on Jacob Ngwele Muvengei, as Kitui residents rally behind their own in the quest for the top electoral job.

Will Ngwele emerge as Kenya’s next IEBC Chairperson? The answer lies in the interviews ahead.
