Detectives in Kitui Central Constituency have launched a manhunt for a prisoner who escaped earlier today while assisting in fencing a prison wall alongside other inmates.
Speaking to Channel 15 News, Kitui Prison Commandant Joseph Loktari confirmed the incident, adding that the officer in charge of supervising the prisoners at the time has been reprimanded as investigations continue.
The escaped prisoner has been identified as John Mutemi Mutua, a resident of Katulani Location. Mutua, who previously worked as a casual laborer at Kalundu Market, was serving a three-year sentence for theft.
Authorities are now appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is urged to report to the nearest police station immediately.
