Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has come out strongly against the arrest and arraignment of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, terming the terrorism charges levelled against him as “outrageous” and politically motivated.

Speaking outside the Kahawa Law Courts on Tuesday, where he appeared in solidarity with the embattled MP, Musyoka described the case as a clear attempt to intimidate dissenting leaders and silence voices standing with the public.

“Today, I’m at Kahawa Law Court to stand in defence of the Manyatta MP, Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, as well as Peter Kinyanjui Wawanjiru and Serah Wanjiku Thiga, who now face outrageous terrorism charges,” Kalonzo stated. “Astonishingly, Hon. Mukunji was arrested alongside an Inooro TV journalist and the boda boda rider who ferried him.”
Musyoka, a seasoned legal mind and former Vice President, said the State was weaponizing anti-terrorism laws to crack down on leaders aligned with the people, warning that such tactics mirror “tools of tyranny.”

“These are trumped-up accusations meant to intimidate and silence leaders who stand with the people,” he said. “But as I said yesterday at this courthouse, these tools of tyranny have an expiration date.”
He pledged to stand firm in the legal and political fight, invoking the 2010 Constitution as the people’s greatest safeguard against abuse of power.
“We will fight this blatant abuse of power with the ultimate weapon: The Constitution of Kenya, 2010. Justice will be our shield and defender,” Kalonzo concluded.
The charges against MP Mukunji, journalist Kinyanjui, and the unnamed boda boda rider have drawn widespread criticism from civil society and media watchdogs, who view the arrests as part of a broader campaign to suppress freedom of expression and association.

Kalonzo’s remarks signal a hardening opposition stance as the political temperature continues to rise ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Wiper leader is positioning himself as a constitutional defender amid growing discontent with the Ruto administration’s handling of dissent.
