The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has disclosed that it has received four formal requests from members of the public seeking the recall of serving Members of Parliament.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement forum in Mombasa, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the commission is currently reviewing the petitions and will act based on the merit of the issues raised.
“The commission has so far received four recall requests. Their determination will be guided by the strength and legality of the matters presented,” Ethekon stated.
The announcement comes at a time of growing public interest in accountability and representation in Parliament, as voters explore legal avenues to address grievances with their elected leaders.
Ethekon also revealed that the commission has moved to the Supreme Court seeking legal direction regarding the delayed boundary review exercise, which has been pending for several years.
“The delay was primarily due to the absence of commissioners. Now that the commission is operational, we have filed a reference before the Supreme Court to guide us on the next steps,” he said.
The boundary review process, which is constitutionally required every eight to twelve years, is expected to impact the number and configuration of constituencies and wards across the country.
The IEBC Chair further outlined several initiatives currently being rolled out as part of the commission’s broader reform agenda. These include: enhanced voter registration drives, electoral legal reforms and the upcoming by-elections in constituencies where seats have fallen vacant
Ethekon said the reforms are aimed at strengthening the electoral process and restoring public confidence in democratic institutions.
“We are committed to ensuring that future electoral processes are credible, inclusive, and transparent,” he added.
The IEBC’s renewed activity comes as Kenya begins to shift focus toward preparations for the 2027 General Election, with expectations high that key electoral processes will be implemented efficiently and in good time.
