“I Didn’t Shoot Him!” Cop Denies Killing Mask Vendor as DPP Fights to Keep Him Behind Bars

A high-stakes courtroom showdown unfolded Monday as Constable Klinzy Barasa Masinde — the police officer at the center of a storm over the deadly anti-police brutality protests — dramatically denied killing 27-year-old mask vendor Boniface Kariuki, even as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) launched a fierce battle to block his release on bail.

File Photo: The late Boniface Kariuki, a 27-year-old mask vendor, pictured receiving treatment in critical condition at Kenyatta National Hospital following a gunshot wound sustained during anti-police brutality protests in June 2025. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Appearing before Justice Kanyi Kimondo, the 32-year-old officer pleaded not guilty to the murder charge linked to the June 2025 shooting that sparked national outrage. But the DPP urged the court to deny Masinde bail, warning that the accused is no ordinary suspect — but a serving officer armed with authority, influence, and dangerous access to weapons and sensitive data.

“This is not just a case of murder — it’s a test of the justice system’s spine,” one prosecutor declared, painting Barasa as a flight risk and a potential threat to key witnesses, many of whom are said to be fellow officers who witnessed the fatal shooting.

Prosecutors also argued that releasing Barasa could trigger public unrest and even expose him to vigilante threats, with the nation still reeling from the graphic footage and testimonies surrounding Kariuki’s death. “His freedom could inflame tensions and undermine public faith in the rule of law,” the court was told.

Despite his denial, the prosecution emphasized that Barasa’s deep knowledge of police operations, surveillance systems, and internal communication networks gives him the tools to manipulate the trial from outside — should the court grant bail.

Justice Kimondo confirmed that Barasa had undergone a mental assessment and was declared fit to stand trial. He ordered the accused to file a formal bond application within seven days and gave the DPP, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and the victims’ representatives an equal period to file their responses.

The hearing on the bond application is scheduled for August 19, 2025, in a case that continues to spotlight Kenya’s struggle with police accountability and the fight for justice in the face of deadly force.
