Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and two of his close associates have a case to answer over the brutal murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno in 2018, the High Court ruled on January 30, 2025. The decision marks a turning point in a high-profile case that has gripped the nation for years, involving politics, power, and betrayal.

    The Case So Far

The prosecution alleges that Obado, along with his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo and ex-county clerk Caspal Obiero, orchestrated the abduction and murder of Sharon, who was seven months pregnant at the time of her death. A government pathologist testified that she died from severe hemorrhage caused by multiple stab wounds and strangulation.

DNA evidence previously presented in court established with a 99.99% probability that Obado was the father of Sharon’s unborn child, strengthening the prosecution’s claim that the murder was meant to cover up an affair that had spiraled out of control.

    Defense Struggles to Dismiss Allegations

Throughout the trial, Obado’s legal team has maintained his innocence, arguing that there is no direct evidence linking him to the crime scene. His lawyers insist that he had an open relationship with Sharon and had committed to supporting her and their unborn child. Furthermore, they claim that on the night of the murder, Obado was attending a meeting at opposition leader Raila Odinga’s home in Karen, far from the crime scene.

Former governor Hon Okoth Obado’s two aides ; Caspal Obiero and Mr Oyamo also have a case to answer on the gruesome murder of Sharon Otieno Former Student, Rongo University.

However, the court found that the circumstantial and forensic evidence presented so far warranted a full trial, rejecting the defense’s attempts to have the case dismissed.

    What’s Next?

With the ruling that Obado, Oyamo, and Obiero have a case to answer, the trial now moves to the defense stage. The accused will be required to present their evidence and witnesses as they fight to clear their names in a case that could redefine the legacy of the former governor.

The ruling has reignited public interest, with many Kenyans awaiting justice for Sharon Otieno, whose gruesome murder shocked the country and exposed the dark underbelly of political power and exploitation.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates.
