In a landmark move poised to reshape conservation efforts in Makueni, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Prof. Erastus Kanga have unveiled a multi-sectoral team to spearhead the drafting of a Land Management Plan for the Ngai Ndethya National Reserve.

The high-level team, comprising representatives from KWS, Makueni’s Lands Department, NEMA, National and County Government Administrations, NLC, conservancies, and local communities, was officially launched on Friday at Mtito Andei. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Makueni’s commitment to balancing conservation, human settlement, and sustainable development.

Speaking at the unveiling, Governor Mutula emphasized the county’s dedication to ensuring that both wildlife and communities thrive in harmony. “Makueni is leading by example in fostering a people-centric conservation model. This plan will not only protect our rich biodiversity but also uplift local livelihoods,” he stated.
Prof. Kanga echoed these sentiments, lauding the collaboration between KWS and Makueni County as a model for conservation-driven development. “This initiative is a testament to what we can achieve when national and county governments, agencies, and citizens work together,” he remarked.

As part of the process, Governor Mutula also led a public engagement forum at Nthunguni Market, where residents voiced their aspirations and concerns regarding the reserve’s future. The discussions underscored the need for a sustainable framework that ensures land rights, wildlife protection, and economic opportunities for the people.
This ambitious plan, once finalized, is expected to transform Ngai Ndethya into a model reserve, setting a precedent for conservation-led growth across Kenya.
