Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu is expected to walk out of Kamiti Maximum Prison after securing a KSh 53 million bank guarantee, paving the way for his temporary release nearly nine months after his incarceration.
Waititu, who has been behind bars since his conviction in February, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in a KSh 588 million corruption case — or an alternative fine of KSh 52.5 million. His legal team confirmed that the bank guarantee has now been approved, fulfilling the court’s requirement for his release.
However, even after leaving prison, the embattled former county chief will remain under the watch of the courts. His previous bond terms in a separate hate speech case will continue to apply. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has indicated its readiness to proceed with that matter, with the next hearing scheduled for January 15, 2026.
Waititu’s release marks yet another dramatic turn in his long-running legal troubles, which have seen him fight battles on multiple fronts since his impeachment as Kiambu Governor in 2020.
