Eight police officers from Maseno Police Station are in custody after being arrested over the mysterious theft of a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 from their own station’s yard.

The incident, which occurred earlier this month, has shocked the public and raised fresh concerns about integrity and accountability within the police service. According to reports, the officers were linked to the disappearance of the official vehicle and were immediately placed under investigation. They have since been transferred to Kisumu Central Police Station, where they are being held pending further probe.

Sources indicate that the matter stems from the theft of a black Land Cruiser V8 that had been parked within the station’s compound. Investigators are now piecing together how the vehicle vanished under the watch of the very officers tasked with its security. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is expected to take up the matter to establish whether the incident was an inside job and if there are accomplices beyond the eight officers.

The arrests have stirred debate over the state of discipline within the police service, with critics warning that such scandals erode public trust in law enforcement. “When those who are supposed to guard the law become the suspects, it undermines confidence in the entire institution,” said a Kisumu-based civil rights advocate.

The Land Cruiser, which is yet to be recovered, is believed to have been part of the station’s operational fleet. The motive behind its disappearance remains unclear, but investigators have not ruled out the possibility of a coordinated scheme.

The case now sets the stage for what could be a major test of accountability within the National Police Service. If the officers are found culpable, they are likely to face charges of theft, abuse of office, and gross misconduct.

For now, the eight remain in custody as the probe continues, with the public keenly awaiting answers on how such a brazen act could unfold right inside a police station yard.
