A flood of condolences continues to pour in following the tragic death of Dorcas Kanini Mbai, the mother of Kitui East MP Hon. Nimrod Mbai, who died on Sunday morning after a vehicle she was travelling in plunged into the deadly Yatta Canal along the Thika–Garissa Highway.

The mid-morning crash occurred near Kithimani in Yatta sub-county, Machakos County. A Toyota Probox carrying three occupants — two women and a male driver — veered off the road and plunged into the canal. One woman died instantly, and it was later confirmed that the victim was the MP’s mother.

Hon. Nimrod Mbai, in an emotional statement issued Sunday night, confirmed the devastating news:
“With a heavy heart, I share the heartbreaking news that I have lost my beloved mother, Dorcas Kanini Mbai, in a tragic road accident at Kithimani along the Nairobi-Garissa Highway in Machakos County.
God who gives, has taken away. Rest in peace, Mama. You were loved beyond words and will be deeply missed. May your soul find eternal peace. Go well, my dear Mum.” 💔🕊️
Since the news broke, tributes and condolence messages have continued to pour in from leaders, institutions, and citizens across the country.
The Kitui Professional Fraternity issued a heartfelt message:
“We extend heartfelt condolences to Hon. Nimrod Mbai and the entire Kitui East community following the tragic loss of his beloved mother, Mama Dorcas Kanini Mbai. We mourn with you during this difficult time. May Mama Dorcas rest in eternal peace.”

Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka Kawaya also joined the mourners:
“I am deeply saddened to learn the sudden death of Dorcas Mbithuka, mother to Hon. Nimrod Mbai, through a road accident at Kithimani. I convey my utmost condolences to her family and the people of Kitui East.”
UDA Lower Eastern Coordinator Engineer Vincent Kavaayi, who was among the first to confirm the fatality, added:
“Her loss is deeply felt across the region. I stand with Hon. Mbai, his family, and the people of Kitui East during this painful time.”
The accident spot — near the Yatta Canal — has long been labeled a blackspot by residents who say the bridge lacks proper signage and safety features.
“This is the second crash at the same canal. It’s the bump before the bridge — drivers overspeed and lose control,” one resident told Channel 15 News.
The family is expected to announce burial arrangements in the coming days, even as mourners continue to send their tributes.
