Former Kitui Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu has declared her intention to vie for the county’s top seat in the 2027 general elections, citing mounting calls from residents urging her to return to active leadership.
Speaking on Friday during a public event in Ikanga, Kitui South, Ngilu told the gathering that her decision was inspired by ongoing appeals from the people of Kitui who believe in her leadership.

“The people of Kitui have asked me to return as their Governor in 2027, and I am ready,” Ngilu said, drawing applause from the crowd.
Her announcement adds weight to what is quickly becoming a crowded and competitive gubernatorial race, as several other influential figures have already declared interest in succeeding Governor Julius Malombe, who is currently serving his second and final term.
Confirmed and Emerging Candidates in the 2027 Kitui Race
Dr. Irene Kasalu – The current Woman Representative, known for her grassroots networks and focus on women and youth empowerment.
Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua – Serving Kitui Senator and senior Wiper official, seen as a loyal party man with a steady base.
Dr. Makali Mulu – Kitui Central MP, praised for his development track record and youth-centered programs in Kitui Central Constituency management of CDF.
David Musila – Former Senator and veteran administrator, enjoys strong support in Mwingi sub-region.
Nicholas Mulila – A Safaricom executive with technocratic credentials, emerging as a well-funded outsider.
Musili Kauta – Community advocate and reformist, appealing to voters seeking fresh leadership.
Governor Julius Malombe – Though term-limited, Malombe’s possible reelection bid is under legal review due to his interrupted terms in office.

Ngilu’s entry is expected to shake up existing political alignments, particularly within the Wiper Party, where several of the front-runners—including Kasalu, Mulu, and Kiio—are also affiliated.
Observers say the race is shaping up to be one of Kitui’s most competitive yet, with a mix of experienced politicians, technocrats, and grassroots leaders all vying for control of the county’s future.
