The Catholic Diocese of Kitui today gathered in deep sorrow and solemn thanksgiving as hundreds of mourners, clergy, religious leaders, and faithful thronged Kitui Cathedral to pay their last respects to the late Rev. Fr. Robert Kalima during a Requiem Mass presided over by the Bishop of Kitui, Rt. Rev. Joseph Mwongela.

In a moving homily, Bishop Mwongela remembered Fr. Kalima as a man of humility, simplicity, and selfless service.

“Fr. Kalima was gentle, kind, and always ready to serve others. He did not chase after fame or recognition but found peace and joy in giving himself to God’s people,” the Bishop said.

Calling on the faithful to emulate Fr. Kalima’s character, the Bishop emphasized the importance of living purposeful lives rooted in love and service.

“Never be discouraged by people opposing what you do or what you would like to do. Do it so well until even your critics come to appreciate your work,” he said.

“You can be very fast but going nowhere,” he added, urging Christians to avoid aimless living and instead become agents of transformation within their families and communities.

Bishop Mwongela also reminded the congregation that genuine Christian life is marked not by position or praise, but by how one treats others and serves God’s purpose.

Following the Requiem Mass, vigil Masses will be held throughout the night in honor of Fr. Kalima, led by various deaneries as follows:

8:00 PM – Southern and Yatta Deaneries (Celebrant: Rev. Fr. Mark Musyoka)

11:00 PM – Western and Northern Deaneries (Celebrant: Rev. Fr. George Marete)

5:00 AM, August 8 – Central and Eastern Deaneries (Celebrant: Rev. Fr. Francis Mutua)

Fr. Robert Kalima, who passed away on July 30 while undergoing treatment at Mater Hospital, will be fondly remembered for his humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication to priestly service. His pastoral legacy, shaped over more than three decades, continues to inspire many across the Diocese of Kitui.
