A heated session at the Machakos County Assembly descended into violence this morning, leaving Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi and Matungulu West MCA Lucky Raphael Nzau hospitalized with serious injuries.

According to Channel 15 News correspondent Peter Mutua, Mwanthi sustained injuries to his eye, while Nzau suffered severe leg injuries in the scuffle. The chaos erupted as the Assembly’s Majority and Minority sides clashed over an ongoing push to remove Speaker Ann Kiusya from office.

The embattled Speaker has been accused of gross misconduct and corruption, with a majority of MCAs vowing to oust her. However, the political battle has taken a dramatic turn, with Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti blaming Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua for allegedly fueling the chaos behind the scenes.

“The forces behind this turmoil are clear. We will not allow external interference in the affairs of Machakos County,” Governor Ndeti stated, calling for calm and lawful resolution of the dispute.

On the other hand, a faction of MCAs insists that Kiusya’s removal is necessary to restore integrity and proper governance in the Assembly. The conflict has now escalated into full-blown confrontations, with today’s altercation marking the most violent session yet.

The two injured leaders have been rushed to hospital for treatment, with their current condition unknown. Security agencies have since been deployed to the Assembly premises to prevent further escalation. Police have also been called in to restore calm as tensions remain high inside the chamber.
As tensions remain high, the fate of Speaker Ann Kiusya hangs in the balance, with political undercurrents hinting at a broader power struggle involving key county and national figures.
