Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is spearheading efforts to consolidate the opposition into a single formidable force to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. In a high-stakes meeting held yesterday at a Nairobi residence of one of his close allies, Uhuru emphasized the need for a united opposition coalition, urging against the rushed unveiling of a presidential candidate.

Matiang’i as a Possible Flagbearer
According to sources, Uhuru is backing former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as the preferred candidate under the Jubilee Party banner instead of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). The meeting, attended by senior political figures including Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni, former ICT CS Joe Mucheru, ex-PS Karanja Kibicho, and Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, focused on strategies to propel Matiang’i’s bid.

While Matiang’i has yet to publicly declare his presidential ambitions, insiders suggest he is being urged to accept the Jubilee Party’s nomination. Senator Onyonka recently hinted at this during the launch of the Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) headquarters, stating that Matiang’i remains a popular choice among opposition circles but is taking time to weigh his options.
Opposition’s Strategic Roadmap
Uhuru’s camp is pushing for opposition parties to first strengthen their individual bases before settling on one strong candidate and a running mate. This approach, he argues, will ensure maximum public support and avoid internal wrangles that could weaken their challenge against Ruto.
“Our proposed nominee, Fred Matiang’i, is a strong performer and a capable leader. However, we want all parties to build their strength before deciding on the ultimate flagbearer,” a senior Jubilee official revealed.

Gachagua’s Parallel Political Moves
Even as the opposition strategizes, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is reportedly finalizing plans to launch his own political party. Sources indicate that his move is aimed at securing his political future amid growing cracks within the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.

Raila, Kalonzo, and Other Opposition Chiefs in the Picture
While Jubilee is positioning Matiang’i as a potential presidential candidate, other key opposition figures, including Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), and Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), are also expected to play critical roles. The big question remains: Will they agree to back a single candidate, or will internal competition derail Uhuru’s grand plan?

With 2027 fast approaching, the battle lines are being drawn, and Uhuru Kenyatta’s influence in shaping the opposition’s strategy is undeniable. However, whether the former president can successfully rally all opposition leaders behind one candidate remains to be seen.
