Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, Kenya’s seasoned opposition leader, is edging closer to clinching the coveted African Union Commission (AUC) Chair position, needing just 12 more votes to secure victory. With the backing of 25 countries so far, Odinga is rallying to meet the required threshold of 32 votes out of 48 eligible nations—a two-thirds majority.

    Strong Regional Support

Raila has received solid endorsements from countries across Africa, with key backing from nations such as Mauritius, Togo, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Seychelles, Malawi, South Sudan, Algeria, and the Republic of Congo. These endorsements highlight Raila’s broad appeal and his reputation as a seasoned statesman with a pan-African agenda.

    Focus on Southern Africa

As the election date, February 25, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, approaches, Raila has intensified his campaign efforts in Southern Africa. Recently, he met Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who currently chairs the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The meeting underscores Odinga’s strategy to consolidate support in the SADC region, which could be pivotal in bridging the gap to the 32-vote requirement.

    High Stakes and Expectations

The AUC Chair election comes at a critical juncture for the African Union, as the continent grapples with issues such as regional security, climate change, economic integration, and youth empowerment. Raila’s experience and vision have resonated with many African leaders, positioning him as a front-runner for the role.

With just weeks to go, Raila’s campaign momentum suggests that he remains a strong contender. However, the next phase of diplomatic engagements will be crucial in determining whether he can garner the remaining votes needed to achieve his long-standing ambition of leading the African Union Commission.

As the continent waits with bated breath, all eyes will be on Addis Ababa next month for what promises to be a landmark election.
