A shocking incident has sent ripples across Kitui South after a resident was brutally assaulted by a bodyguard of Kitui South MP Hon. Rachael Kaki Nyamai. The victim, Peter Kasamu Kaluva, a resident of Kakuyu Village in Ilamba Sub-location, Simisi Location, is currently nursing serious head injuries following the violent attack.

According to eyewitness accounts, the altercation occurred when Kaluva reportedly engaged the bodyguard in a heated exchange during a community event. The situation quickly escalated when the bodyguard, in a move that has drawn widespread condemnation, struck Kaluva on the head with the muzzle of a pistol, leaving him bleeding profusely.

The 34-year-old Kaluva was rushed to a nearby health facility, where medical practitioners described his condition as critical but stable. The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who have demanded immediate action against the bodyguard and called for Hon. Kaki to address the matter.

“This is a gross abuse of power and a blatant violation of human rights,” said a local elder, visibly angered by the incident. “Our leaders should protect us, not allow their security personnel to turn weapons on us.”

Leaders from Kitui County and beyond have joined in condemning the assault. Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua termed the act “barbaric and unbecoming” and called for an independent investigation to ensure justice is served. “This kind of behavior cannot and will not be tolerated. Those entrusted with power must exercise it with humility and respect for the very people who elected them,” he said.

MP Hon. Rachael Kaki, who has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, is facing mounting pressure from both her constituents and human rights organizations to explain her bodyguard’s actions and take responsibility.

The incident has reignited debate over the conduct of security personnel attached to public officials, with many questioning whether their training includes understanding the importance of restraint and respect for civilians.

As the victim recovers, angry residents have threatened to hold protests if swift action is not taken against the assailant. “We will not allow this to be swept under the carpet,” said one of Kaluva’s relatives. “Peter deserves justice, and we will fight to ensure he gets it.”

The Kitui County Police Commander has confirmed that the incident is under investigation, with the bodyguard in question being summoned for questioning. However, activists are skeptical about the impartiality of the probe and are calling for the involvement of independent oversight bodies.

As Kitui South comes to terms with this troubling event, the pressure is on Hon. Kaki to restore faith in her leadership and take decisive action to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future. Meanwhile, Peter Kasamu Kaluva’s plight stands as a grim reminder of the power imbalance between public officials and the citizens they are meant to serve.
