As part of the ongoing celebrations marking 60 years of evangelization in the Catholic Diocese of Kitui, over 500 Catholic teachers gathered at the Our Lady of Protection Shrine in Museve for their annual Teachers’ Mass. The event, themed “Catholic Schools: Hubs of Foundational Learning and Integral Formation for Holistic Growth,” was a vibrant and uplifting occasion, presided over by Bishop Joseph Mwongela.

In his homily, Bishop Mwongela urged teachers to find joy and purpose in their profession, despite its challenges. He encouraged them to maintain a positive outlook, make wise choices, and embrace teaching as a calling. “There is greatness in you as a teacher,” he told them.

“Love your students, make them your friends, and help them grow. Don’t see criminals in them; address their mistakes with love and understanding.”

Rev. Fr. Anthony Muema, the Education Secretary, highlighted the vital role of education in shaping future generations. He called on teachers to be agents of transformation, guiding students not only academically but also in faith and ethics. “Be role models, embark on faith formation, and carry holistic education wherever you go. The Church relies on you for the formation of tomorrow’s leaders,” he said.

Mr. Nicholas Muasya, National Executive Secretary of the Commission for Education and Religious Education, echoed these sentiments, reminding teachers that their role extends beyond academic instruction.

“Teaching is a vocation. As you teach, remember that God has called you to share the Good News,” he said. Muasya also emphasized the importance of personal spiritual growth for teachers, advising them to reflect on their own lives, meditate, and take time for prayer in order to better serve their students and communities.

The Diocese will culminate its Jubilee celebrations on December 7, 2024, with a special ordination ceremony.
