In a recent shake-up within Kenya’s health sector, President William Ruto has appointed Dr. Abdi Mohamed as the new Chairperson of the Social Health Authority (SHA). Dr. Mohamed will serve in this position for a term of three years, taking over from Dr. Timothy Olweny.

Dr. Olweny, who had been serving as the SHA Chairperson, will now assume the role of Chairperson of the National Cancer Institute. This appointment comes following the revocation of Dr. Gitahi Githinji’s tenure at the institute, signaling a strategic move in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the fight against cancer.

The appointments highlight President Ruto’s commitment to reshaping the country’s healthcare governance, ensuring new leadership in critical positions. Dr. Abdi Mohamed is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the Social Health Authority, focusing on enhancing public health services and ensuring the social health system is more inclusive and efficient.

Dr. Olweny, known for his strong background in healthcare management, is anticipated to play a pivotal role in furthering the National Cancer Institute’s mandate of addressing the rising burden of cancer in Kenya. His expertise and experience are seen as key in guiding the institute to achieve its long-term goals of research, prevention, and treatment of cancer.

These appointments are part of a broader reorganization by the government to ensure effective leadership in critical national institutions.
