Kenyans will no longer access healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) after September 30, 2024, as the government is set to transition to a new health insurance scheme, the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). The transition marks a significant shift in Kenya’s healthcare system, aimed at expanding access and improving health coverage for all citizens.
In a statement issued by NHIF CEO Elijah Wachira, it was confirmed that all benefits under the new SHIF will be available to members starting October 1, 2024. The new system will be overseen by the Social Health Authority (SHA), which will take over the management of healthcare services previously under NHIF.
Additionally, Wachira clarified that payments made on or before October 9, 2024, will be credited to NHIF accounts. However, any payments made after this date will be credited to SHA as part of the new scheme.
The transition is part of broader healthcare reforms spearheaded by the government to enhance universal healthcare coverage for all Kenyans, ensuring that the new insurance scheme offers comprehensive medical services under a streamlined authority.
