Second Michael Kanyanya Billboard Vandalized as Mwingi North Wiper Race Turns Bitter

The destruction of Hon. Michael Kavate Kanyanya’s campaign billboard in Kyuso has reignited debate over political intolerance in Mwingi North, coming just weeks after another of his billboards was vandalized at Tseikuru Market.

The latest incident, which Kavate says occurred on Friday night, has heightened concerns among his supporters, who argue that the repeated targeting of his campaign materials reflects growing anxiety among some political rivals over his rising popularity ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement released on Monday, Kavate condemned the vandalism, describing it as an attack on democracy and accusing those behind the incidents of lacking an agenda for the people of Mwingi North.

The latest attack comes barely weeks after a similar act of vandalism at Tseikuru Market. Speaking during a public baraza following the first incident, Kavate claimed he was in possession of evidence, including M-PESA transaction messages, which he alleged pointed to individuals who financed and coordinated the destruction of his billboard.

While he did not publicly release the alleged evidence or identify those he believed were involved, he warned that those responsible would eventually be exposed. With the latest billboard now brought down in Kyuso, his supporters say the perpetrators have struck again despite those earlier warnings.

The Wiper Patriotic Front aspirant has, in recent months, emerged as one of the constituency’s most visible political figures through grassroots engagements, education support initiatives, community forums and a sustained campaign encouraging voter registration. His growing presence has increasingly positioned him among the leading contenders in the race for the Wiper Party ticket in Mwingi North.

Supporters of Kavate claim the repeated destruction of his campaign materials is evidence that some rivals view him as a formidable challenger for the party’s nomination. They argue that his growing popularity has unsettled sections of the local political class. Channel 15 News has not independently verified those claims, and no individual or group has publicly claimed responsibility for either act of vandalism.

The political debate intensified after a local blogger associated with one of Kavate’s rival camps conducted an informal WhatsApp poll seeking members’ preferred Wiper parliamentary candidate for Mwingi North. Results shared on the platform showed Kavate attracting more than 75 percent of the votes cast, with the other aspirants trailing significantly.

The poll was informal and is not a scientific measure of voter support, but it has been widely cited by Kavate’s supporters as evidence of his growing influence within the constituency.

Political observers say Kavate’s visibility has grown considerably over recent months, with frequent engagements across Mwingi North helping to expand his support base. The back-to-back vandalism incidents have now added another layer to an increasingly competitive contest for the Wiper Party nomination.

Kavate has called on security agencies to investigate the repeated destruction of his campaign materials and bring those responsible to justice, insisting that political competition should be based on ideas, leadership and service rather than intimidation or destruction of property.

As the race for the Wiper Party ticket gathers momentum, attention is expected to remain focused on whether aspirants can win over voters through their policies and public engagement while ensuring that political competition remains peaceful and respectful of democratic principles.
