A fatal road accident involving nine vehicles at Karai along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway has claimed the life of Nyandarua County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) John Rioba and left several others injured, including Uasin Gishu County Assembly Majority Whip Regina Chumba.
According to preliminary reports, the multi-vehicle collision occurred on Monday , causing significant traffic disruption along one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors. Authorities confirmed that Rioba succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, while Chumba suffered chest injuries and was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The cause of the accident had not been established at the time of reporting, with traffic police launching investigations as rescue teams and emergency personnel worked to assist victims and clear the scene.
Rioba’s death has elicited widespread condolences within the security sector, where he was widely regarded as a committed and professional officer who served diligently in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Leaders, colleagues and members of the public paid tribute to the senior detective on social media, highlighting his dedication to public service and his contribution to crime prevention and investigations in Nyandarua County.
Meanwhile, family members, colleagues and residents of Uasin Gishu County expressed relief following reports that MCA Regina Chumba survived the crash, despite sustaining injuries that required medical attention.

The incident has renewed concerns over road safety on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, a route that has experienced numerous serious and fatal accidents over the years, often attributed to heavy traffic volumes, speeding and other hazardous driving conditions.
Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when travelling on major highways, as investigations into the Karai crash continue.
