The newly appointed Eastern Regional Commissioner, Jacob Ouma Muganda, has assured Kitui leaders that security agencies are closing in on suspects linked to a series of killings that have heightened fears across parts of the county.
Mr Muganda made the remarks during a meeting with members of the Kitui County Assembly Service Board led by Speaker Kelvin Kinengo Katisya, where concerns over rising insecurity dominated discussions.
The leaders raised alarm over recent banditry attacks in Mwingi North and the discovery of several unidentified bodies in Mwingi Central, incidents that have sparked anxiety among residents and renewed calls for tougher security measures.
According to Speaker Katisya, the Regional Commissioner strongly condemned the killings and assured leaders that investigations were progressing well.
“He informed us that security agencies have secured critical leads and that arrests will be made soon,” Mr Katisya said after the meeting.
The Regional Commissioner also revealed that additional security personnel had been deployed to affected areas as part of efforts to restore calm and protect residents from further attacks.
Mr Muganda emphasized that the protection of human life remains paramount, saying security agencies would pursue all leads to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The meeting comes at a time when insecurity has emerged as a major concern in Kitui County. In recent weeks, residents have expressed growing fears following reports of violent attacks in Mwingi North and the recovery of bodies in different parts of Mwingi Central, prompting calls for urgent government intervention.
Speaker Katisya welcomed the government’s response and pledged continued collaboration between the County Assembly and national security agencies.
“We will continue working closely with the Regional Commissioner, the County Commissioner and all security agencies to ensure the safety of our people,” he said.
The Speaker also expressed confidence in Mr Muganda’s ability to address security challenges in the region, citing his extensive experience in public administration and his familiarity with Kitui County.
Before his appointment as Eastern Regional Commissioner, Mr Muganda served as a District Officer in Mutitu and Zombe and later as District Commissioner in Ikutha. He also previously served as Meru County Commissioner, giving him a deep understanding of the security and administrative dynamics of the Eastern region.
The Kitui speaker thanked President William Ruto for appointing a regional administrator with a strong understanding of Kitui and the wider Eastern region, expressing hope that the experience would help strengthen security coordination and restore public confidence.
The meeting underscored the growing urgency among leaders to address insecurity in Kitui, with residents now awaiting the arrests and investigations promised by security agencies.
