Comedian and activist Eric Omondi was on Monday released on a personal bond of Sh100,000 after pleading not guilty to charges of obstructing traffic along Kimathi Street in Nairobi during a protest against rising fuel prices.

Omondi, who was represented by lawyer Babu Owino, denied allegations that he unlawfully obstructed motorists by offloading 120 empty jerricans onto the busy city street as part of a demonstration highlighting the burden of increasing fuel costs on Kenyans.

According to court documents, prosecutors accuse the activist of disrupting the normal flow of traffic and inconveniencing road users during the protest. However, Omondi maintained his innocence and entered a not guilty plea before the court.

The court granted him a personal bond of Sh100,000 and ordered his release pending further proceedings. The matter is scheduled for mention on July 2, 2026, when the court is expected to give further directions on the case.

The incident has reignited debate over the rising cost of living and the role of public demonstrations in drawing attention to economic challenges facing ordinary Kenyans. Omondi has in recent years emerged as one of the country’s most outspoken activists, frequently using public campaigns and demonstrations to advocate for social and economic issues.
