Tanzania has been thrown into mourning following the death of Suzana Mussa Magufuli, the mother of former Tanzanian President .
Suzana passed away in the early hours of Sunday, May 25, 2026, at her home in Chato, Geita Region, after a prolonged illness, according to family members.
Speaking to AyoTV by phone, Jesca Magufuli, one of the late president’s children, confirmed the death, saying the family was deeply saddened by the loss.
“Our mother passed away at one o’clock at home in Chato after a long illness; the family will announce funeral arrangements,” Jesca said.
She added, “The Lord gives and the Lord takes.”
Suzana Mussa Magufuli was widely respected within her community for her dedication to family values and her support for various local initiatives in Chato and the wider Geita Region.
Her death has once again brought national attention to the Magufuli family, which remains influential in Tanzania years after the passing of former President John Pombe Magufuli in March 2021.
Leaders, residents and supporters are expected to join the family in mourning as preparations for her burial get underway. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
