The Kenya Police Service has announced major changes within the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) following the recent security breach involving President William Ruto in Ganze, Kilifi County.
In the changes dated May 24, 2026 and signed by Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, Mr. William Sawe has been appointed the new Commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit, replacing Mr. Noah Kirwa Maiyo who has been redeployed to Vigilance House at Kenya Police Headquarters.
The reshuffle also saw Mr. Juda Mathews Gwiyo, who served as Deputy Commandant PEU, proceed on leave pending retirement.
At the same time, Mr. George Kirera has been elevated from Staffing Officer Personnel PEU to Deputy Commandant PEU, while Mr. Josphat Sirma has been promoted from Deputy Commanding Officer of the Recce Sub Unit to Commanding Officer of the elite unit.
Additionally, Mr. Rere Kipkoech has been transferred from Deputy SOB1 to Kenya Police Headquarters – Vigilance.

The changes come just hours after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja termed the Ganze incident a “serious security lapse” and ordered immediate restructuring of the presidential security detail.
A special investigations team has already been constituted to probe the circumstances surrounding the breach that has sparked national debate over the President’s security preparedness.
