Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has filed a motion in the Senate seeking to either stop or reduce retirement benefits currently enjoyed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, in what is set to ignite a fresh political storm over the privileges of retired Heads of State.
In the motion, Cherargei argues that continued political involvement by the former President raises questions on the justification of maintaining full state-funded retirement benefits.
He further wants the Auditor General to conduct a comprehensive audit of all public resources allocated to Uhuru Kenyatta, including allowances, security arrangements, and other state support, and table a detailed report before Parliament within 60 days.

The senator maintains that public resources extended to retired leaders must be subjected to strict accountability, especially where questions arise over their continued role in active political engagements.
The proposal is expected to trigger intense debate in the Senate and across the political divide, with supporters viewing it as a push for accountability, while critics are likely to see it as politically motivated.
Neither former President Uhuru Kenyatta nor his office had publicly responded to the motion at the time of publishing. If adopted, the motion could pave the way for a review of legal frameworks governing retirement benefits for former Presidents in Kenya.
